“Who am I?” The Dilemma of Third Culture Kids
Chapelgate Christian Academy is a richly diverse place representing families of many races, ethnicities and backgrounds. We would be naïve or foolish to imagine that we do not need to be very intentional in exploring some of the issues and concerns that come along with being such a community. To that end, the International Student Program at CCA has invited Ms. Ruth E. Van Reken, a world-renowned expert on Third Culture kids (TCK) and co-author of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, to come and share with our students, families and the broader community on this important topic.
Another expert in the field, David Pollock, defines a TCK as “a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents’ culture(s)… Although elements from each culture may be assimilated into the TCK’s life experience, the sense of belonging is often in relationship to others of similar background. ”
At CCA we have a variety of students for whom attendance at CCA is a cross-cultural experience. Of particular interest to us in this visit by Ms. Van Reken are international students who have come from overseas to study in the US and immigrants’ children who either have come here and live with family or were actually born here but their home life is not culturally American. These students have challenges that Ms. Van Reken is uniquely equipped to sensitively address with them. There will be several opportunities to hear Ms. Van Reken during the first week of October:
• Tuesday 10/3, 7:00 PM: Ms. Van Reken will be speaking in the Chapel to parents and host parents.
• Wednesday 10/4: During the day she will speak to ESL classes at school.
• Thursday 10/5 8:30 AM: She will present at an all school assembly immediately followed by a time with those in our school who see themselves as third culture kids.
• Friday 10/6: She will conduct an in-service for CCA teachers.
If you are a CCA parent or someone in the broader community who is interested in hearing Ms. Van Reken please contact Mrs. Arildsen, and she will let you know a good time you can hear her.
