On January 9, 2017, Alumna Kenya Cummins was invited to address the CCA School Board and speak about her experiences transitioning from CCA to Hampton University in VA where she is studying political science and minoring in cinema studies. She has discovered that even though Hampton is a secular college it has been a great place to grow in her faith. She credits CCA for helping to prepare her spiritually.

She found CCA to be a place of mentoring by caring Christian adults who also provided inspiration and opportunities for serving others.

Mr. Van Ness and members of the School Board listening attentively to Kenya

She also described how CCA prepared her academically. She had opportunity to stretch herself through honors and AP courses. She was blessed by the media center and the personnel there. The Guidance office and the planning meetings were crucial for her in reaching the next steps of applying for college.

Mr. Van Ness asked how well CCA had prepared her in the area of technology. She was in high school when CCA rolled out initiatives increasing the use of technology in the classroom. Specifically, Kenya mentioned how helpful it was to be trained in the use of her I-pad and I-phone as tools of learning. She fondly recalled the use of Smartboard technology in French class! Her Computer Science courses gave her background and experience with Microsoft Office.

In the area of Leadership she had many, many opportunities to grow. Whether it was running for class office, going to leadership conferences, being a leader in sports or musical groups, opportunities abounded to get involved and make a difference. Kenya was the founder of the school’s Black History Month club. The influence of this club is still being felt.

Kenya expressed her gratitude to the Board for their role in supporting and encouraging students like her at CCA. She thanked them for providing the support to allow the school to accomplish its mission and how that played out in her experience here. All who were present were touched and blessed by Kenya’s testimony. We all wish you well Kenya and know that, “he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
